Start by trimming the wick to 1/4" - 1/8" of an inch in length every time you burn. You can use scissors to do this, but once the candle burns down it'll get harder to reach the blades far enough into the jar, you can also use nail clippers.

Candles should not burn for more than four hours at a time. it is recommended that after burning for four hours, candles be extinguished, allowed to cool for two hours, and trimmed before relighting.

Always keep a burning candle within sight. Extinguish all candles when leaving a room or before going to sleep. Never leave a candle on or near anything that can catch fire. Make sure your wick is trimmed before lighting.
